Donation Campaigns and Rent Collection on Paysasa: Purpose-Built Collections

Features

Two collection tools for very different needs: donation campaigns with public donate pages and gift receipts, and rent collection with tenant portals, reminders and tracking.

Not all collections are sales. A school raising money for a library, a church supporting families in need, a community group helping a member with medical bills — these are donations. A landlord collecting from tenants in several units is collecting rent. Both have their own needs, and Paysasa offers purpose-built tools for each.

This deep dive covers Donation Campaigns and Rent Collections.

Part 1: Donation Campaigns

Donation Campaigns are designed for fundraising by verified businesses and organisations, with public donate pages and gift receipts.

How a donation campaign works

Creating a campaign

A campaign includes:

  • A title and purpose, such as "School fees support".
  • A beneficiary name.
  • An amount mode: open amounts, where donors choose, or select/tiered amounts, with an optional minimum.
  • Optional donor details, so supporters can share their name or give anonymously.

Ways to give

Each campaign gets a public donate page. Supporters can give through:

  • M-Pesa STK — enter a number and approve the prompt.
  • Paysasa wallet.
  • PayBill, using the campaign's public reference (in the format DN-XXXXX) as the account number.

Receipts and reports

Donors can receive gift receipts with sequential numbering, and organisers can download CSV campaign reports for accountability and sharing with committees or boards.

Why it helps

  • Transparency: donations are recorded, not just announced in a group chat.
  • Accountability: reports show what was raised and when.
  • Reach: a shareable page works across WhatsApp, social media and email.
  • Separation: funds settle to the organisation's business wallet, not a personal phone.

Tips for successful campaigns

  • Tell a clear, honest story about the purpose and the beneficiary.
  • Set an understandable goal and share progress updates.
  • Thank donors promptly.
  • Publish a summary at the end showing how funds were used.

Part 2: Rent Collections

Rent Collections brings property and tenancy collection workflows into Paysasa, with reminders and dashboard visibility for landlords and managers.

What it includes

  • Units and tenancies, so each unit's rent is tracked on its own.
  • Due dates, for example rent due on the 5th of each month.
  • Reminders before rent falls due.
  • Tenant portals, where tenants can see what they owe and pay.
  • Collection tracking, so landlords can see at a glance which units have paid and which are overdue.

Why it helps

  • Less chasing: reminders do the follow-up.
  • Clear records: every payment is linked to a unit and a period.
  • Better tenant experience: tenants know exactly what is due and how to pay.
  • Easier reporting for owners with several properties or managers acting for landlords.

Tips for landlords

  • Set clear due dates and communicate them in the tenancy agreement.
  • Send reminders a few days before rent is due, not after.
  • Keep each property's collections in its own business wallet if you manage several.
  • Review overdue units weekly and talk to tenants early if there is a problem.

Availability

Donation Campaigns and Rent Collections are module-gated features. Their current status is shown on the Paysasa features page; some modules may be available in private beta or to selected businesses. Donations require the module to be enabled for a verified business.

For developers

Donation campaigns can be created through the Paysasa API with a business API key, returning a campaign with a public page slug and PayBill reference. See the Paysasa API docs.

Illustrative examples

A school fundraiser: a parents' association in Embu creates a campaign for new library books with open amounts. Parents give by M-Pesa from the donate page or by PayBill using the DN reference. At the end, the treasurer exports the CSV report for the school board.

A small landlord: a landlord with twelve units in Ruaka sets rent due on the 5th, turns on reminders and checks the tracking view each week. Tenants pay from their portal, and overdue units stand out immediately.

Choosing the right tool

If you are collecting gifts for a cause, use a donation campaign. If you collect the same amount from the same people on a schedule — like tenants — use rent collection. For one-off fundraisers among friends, a simple payment link can also work.

Fees

Fees are listed on the Paysasa pricing page.

Conclusion

Donations and rent are very different, but both benefit from clear pages, easy mobile payment, reminders and records everyone can trust. Paysasa's purpose-built tools bring structure to both.
