Introducing Lengo: Save Now, Buy Later on Paysasa

News

Lengo lets customers save towards a specific product with a deadline and reminders, while merchants publish offers and get committed buyers. Here is how it works on Paysasa.

Many people know exactly what they want to buy next — a cooker, a phone, a mattress, a set of tools for work — but not how to make the money appear at once. Credit is one answer. Saving first is another, and often a better one.

That is the idea behind Lengo, Paysasa's Save Now, Buy Later feature. Lengo is available on Paysasa for customers and verified merchants. Here is what it does and how to use it.

What is Lengo?

Lengo is a structured save-now-buy-later journey. Instead of borrowing to buy, a customer chooses a product from a merchant, sets a saving plan and deposits towards it over time. When the target is reached, the goal is completed and the purchase is made — with no debt left behind.

"Lengo" means "goal" in Swahili, and that is exactly how it works: one product, one goal, one clear path to owning it.

How Lengo works for customers

  1. Find an offer. Browse a merchant's Lengo storefront or click a Lengo widget on their website.
  2. Start a goal. Choose how long you want to save — within the maximum window the merchant allows — and how often you will deposit.
  3. Save as you go. Deposit from your Paysasa wallet into a savings wallet linked to the goal. If you do not already have a savings wallet in the offer currency, one is created for you.
  4. Get reminders. Email reminders arrive before your save-by date, so you stay on track.
  5. Complete the goal. Once you reach the target, the goal can be completed and the purchase finalised.

If a goal expires before it is completed, the saved amount is refunded automatically, so your money is never stuck.

How Lengo works for merchants

Lengo gives merchants a way to sell to customers who are planning ahead:

  • Create Lengo offers with a product title, image, the original price and an optional Lengo price.
  • Suggest a saving rhythm, such as weekly instalments.
  • Set the maximum saving window — for example 14, 30, 60 or 90 days. Customers can choose a shorter window, but not a longer one.
  • Publish on public storefronts and use embed widgets on your own website so customers can start a goal directly from a product page.
  • Track goals and deposits from your dashboard, and receive Lengo webhooks in your own systems.

To protect customers, Lengo requires a verified business by default.

Who is Lengo for?

Lengo works well for products people plan for:

  • Household appliances and electronics
  • Furniture and mattresses
  • Back-to-school items and uniforms
  • Tools and equipment for small businesses
  • Solar products and clean cooking equipment
  • Gifts and seasonal purchases

An illustrative example

Imagine a small electronics shop in Thika that sells a popular cooker. The owner creates a Lengo offer with a slightly lower Lengo price and a 60-day maximum window. A customer starts a goal for 60 days with weekly deposits, receives reminders as the deadline approaches and completes the goal on time. The customer avoids debt; the shop gains a committed buyer and a predictable sale.

Why save first?

  • No interest or repayments after the purchase.
  • Less risk if income changes — you are saving money you already have.
  • Better discipline with a clear target and a deadline.
  • A real goal — saving for a specific item is more motivating than saving "for later".

Tips for merchants launching Lengo offers

  • Pick products people plan for. Items with a clear price and a reason to wait work best.
  • Consider a Lengo price. A modest saving compared with the original price rewards customers for committing early.
  • Choose a sensible maximum window. Shorter windows suit lower-priced items; longer windows suit bigger purchases.
  • Suggest a realistic instalment. A weekly amount that matches your customers' income makes completion more likely.
  • Promote the storefront. Share your Lengo link on social media and add the widget to product pages.

For developers

Lengo is available through the Paysasa API. Merchants can create offers, list them in a public catalogue, resolve offers for embed widgets and subscribe to Lengo lifecycle events through business webhooks. See the Lengo sections in the Paysasa API docs.

Fees

Lengo fees, like other Paysasa fees, are listed on the pricing page.

Conclusion

Lengo turns "one day I will buy that" into a plan with a deadline. For customers, it is a debt-free way to afford bigger purchases. For merchants, it is a new way to reach buyers who are ready to commit.
