Every seller who moves online eventually faces the same question: should I sell on a marketplace, or build my own website?
It sounds like an either-or decision. In practice, many successful sellers treat the two as complementary channels that do different jobs. In this post we look at the strengths and trade-offs of each, and how to combine them without doubling your workload.
What a marketplace does well
A marketplace brings buyers and sellers together in one place. We built Airsoko as an all-in-one marketplace that connects buyers and sellers, with products, digital goods, tickets and services on one platform.
The main advantages of a marketplace are:
- Shoppers are already there. People browse categories, search and look at deals. You do not have to bring every visitor yourself.
- Trust is built in. Shoppers recognise a marketplace's checkout, payment options and return policy. On Airsoko, these include M-PESA, PayPal and Visa or MasterCard, and our published Returns Policy.
- Operations support. Our sellers can ship orders themselves or use Airsoko Fulfillment Services (AFS), where we store, pick, pack and deliver for them.
- Low cost to start. Creating an account and listing products on Airsoko is free, and we charge a commission when you make a sale (see our Sell page). The current rates are on our Commission Structure page.
The trade-off is that you share the page with competitors, follow the marketplace's rules, and the shopper's relationship is partly with the platform.
What your own website does well
An own-brand online store is your space. You control the look, the message and the customer experience.
- Brand identity. Your logo, your colours, your domain.
- Easy sharing. A link you can post on WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
- Direct relationships. Repeat customers come to you, not to a search results page.
The trade-off is traffic. Nobody stumbles onto a new website by accident. You have to market it.

Why "both" is often the right answer
The two channels solve each other's weaknesses. The marketplace brings new customers who are already shopping. Your own store gives loyal customers and social followers a branded place to buy.
Within our Neftac family, this pairing is deliberate. Xduka POS, our sister platform, runs your shop's till, stock and branded online storefront, with payment collections through Paysasa. It is part of the Airsoko ecosystem. Our sister platform Paysasa is the payment gateway supporting M-PESA, PayPal and card payments for buyers and sellers.
How to run two channels without burning out
The fear is that two channels mean twice the work. It does not have to.
Keep one source of truth for products
Write your product titles, descriptions and photos once, carefully, and reuse them. Good content is the slowest part of selling online, so do not do it twice.
Keep stock numbers honest
Overselling is the fastest way to damage your reputation. Our seller rules warn that order cancellations for reasons such as "out of stock" attract penalties, and advise sellers who cannot fulfil an item to set its quantity to zero. If the same stock sells on two channels, update quantities promptly.
Give each channel a job
- Marketplace: discovery, new customers, deals and campaigns.
- Own store: returning customers, social media campaigns, your full range and your story.
Point people the right way
Marketplace customers who love your products may want to follow your store. Our store pages have a Follow button and a Message button. Keep all transactions for marketplace orders on the platform, though. Our rules treat diverting orders off the platform to avoid commission as a reason for store closure.

Which should you start with?
If you are just starting and do not yet have an audience, a marketplace gets your products in front of shoppers fastest. If you already have a strong social following, a branded store gives those followers a professional place to buy. Most sellers eventually benefit from both.
A sensible sequence for many small businesses:
- List your best sellers on the marketplace with excellent photos and descriptions.
- Collect reviews by shipping fast and answering questions quickly.
- Open a branded store for your own audience once you are ready to market it.
- Review monthly which channel brings which customers, and adjust.
Two channels, one brand
Marketplace versus own website is not really a contest. One is a busy high street, the other is your own shop with your name above the door. Used together, they reach more customers and build a stronger brand than either one alone.
Start where the shoppers already are: learn how to sell on Airsoko, and explore Xduka POS when you are ready for your own branded store.
