Shipping checklist

This checklist shows the main steps require to start shipping products from your store. Complete the below tasks:

  1. Set up your shipping rates & methods
  2. Add product weights
  3. Choose your preferred package type
  4. Print a test shipping label

Set up your shipping rates and methods

For deciding what to charge buyers for shipping, you have to consider the following options:

  • Exact shipping costs: Charge buyers the same thing that carriers like USPS or Canada Post charge to ship.
  • Flat rate shipping: Charge fixed shipping rates based on order value or weight.
  • Free shipping: Offer free shipping on all orders or set free shipping rules.

Add product weights

Shipping costs are calculated based on the weight and dimensions of your shipment. To calculate exact shipping costs, add weights to all of the products that you will be shipping. If you’re not sure how much your products weigh, then learn about common product weights or order a scale.

Choose your preferred package types

Save your preferred package types on the shipping settings page of your admin. You can select envelopes, boxes, or carrier-specific packaging like USPS Flat Rate packaging.

Prior to receiving your initial order, establish your preferred shipping methods and configure your store's shipping settings. This enables customers to select a delivery method during checkout. The choice of delivery methods depends on your business and the nature of the physical goods you offer. The primary methods include shipping, local delivery, and local pickup, providing flexibility for your business to employ any of these options for product delivery.

Setting up shipping profiles

A shipping profile comprises shipping rules tailored for specific products and locations. For uniform shipping rates across all products, a general shipping profile suffices. However, if you aim for distinct shipping rates for specific products, the option exists to create additional custom shipping profiles. This customization provides flexibility in tailoring shipping costs based on the unique characteristics of your products.

Considerations for setting up shipping profiles

Before you set up your shipping profiles, review the following considerations:

Ensure familiarity with shipping zones and rates as each location in a profile can have its own set. Be aware that certain fulfillment apps, like on-demand custom printing apps, can automatically integrate as a location, impacting your shipping setup.

When dealing with orders containing products from various shipping profiles or locations, the shipping rates for each product are combined into a single rate at checkout. This amalgamation might result in higher shipping costs for customers.

Note:

- Products or variants can be added to only one shipping profile at a time.

- Adding a product or variant to a second profile automatically removes it from the first.

- To grant access to shipping profiles, provide staff members or collaborators with Products and Manage settings staff permissions.
